There is a new and growing grass roots movement of people all across the United States fighting for mandatory labeling of food made with GMO ingredients. With a narrow loss on mandatory labeling in California in 2012, as well as with Initiative 522 in Washington State this year, the movement is pressing on to many other states in 2014. The voice of the people cannot be stopped! A BIG thanks to all of you who supported your right-to-know in Washington in November – we stand by you.
WE SAY YES!
While we’d prefer a national framework, we believe that successful state-level labeling campaigns will ultimately lead to a federal standard delivering consistent GMO labeling regulation throughout the US. We were pleased to stand with advocates, campaigners, policy makers, consumers, retailers, and others in calling Washington State voters to pass Initiative 522 that would have required GMO labeling. If you believe, as we do–that consumers have the right to know what’s in the products they buy–then we’d encourage you to join us in supporting mandatory GMO labeling legislation here.
In Washington State, we put up billboards shared the YES on 522 message through our social media platforms, and we ensured that the YES on 522 message made it to nearly every citizen of the state. Throughout August and September, our team was driving our scoop truck around giving out pamphlets informing folks of the importance of voting YES on 522 - and of course some free ice cream too! Also we had Jerry in the state speaking at colleges and events in Spokane and Seattle spreading the YES on 522 message.
And we’re not just talking the talk, we’re also trying to walk the walk. Which is why we have decided to transition all of our ingredients in every single flavor of Ben & Jerry’s to source only non-GMO ingredients. We’re already 80% of the way there (by volume), and we’ll finish the rest of the chunks and swirls by mid 2014. When we complete the transition, we will be one of the first non-organic national brands to source completely non-GMO.
