In July of 2005, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit opened the Woodward Avenue scoop shop, located in the Compuware World Headquarters building in the heart of downtown Detroit. The building also houses popular venues like Hard Rock Café and Borders Books & Music, and is at the center of revitalization in the Campus Martius area.

Goodwill empowers people who have disabilities and other barriers to employment to become independent and self-reliant. This mission is accomplished through a variety of training and work experience opportunities, and employment in the community. Thousands of lives are touched every year through Goodwill’s services in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and the City of Detroit.

All proceeds from the Woodward Avenue PartnerShop support the work of Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit.

In May 2004, Life’sWork of Western Pennsylvania opened the first Pittsburgh-based PartnerShop in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood. The Squirrel Hill Ben & Jerry’s provides real-life work experiences to youth that face barriers to employment.

Life’sWork is a non-profit agency that helps people with disabilities or other barriers to employment achieve independence and dignity through productive employment opportunities. Life’sWork has been providing equal opportunities for employment for individuals with disabilities or other barriers since 1928.

The profits from the Squirrel Hill PartnerShop go to Life’sWork to support their programs for youth.

The first PartnerShop in the Pacific Northwest opened in October, 2004. This PartnerShop, owned and operated by New Avenues for Youth, a nonprofit organization serving Portland’s homeless youth, provides supportive employment and job training to help youth build skills which can help move them off the streets and into stable and positive living situations.

Since 1997, New Avenues has successfully guided over 1,200 youth back into positive living situations and prevented hundreds more from becoming homeless.

The New Avenues strategy centers around four basic goals:

• Prevent homelessness among youth by immediately responding to their needs
• Engage homeless youth positively by building trust
• Stabilize youth so they can begin to heal from abuse
• Educate and train youth so they never have to return to the streets

New Avenues for Youth opened their second PartnerShop at Portland State University in July of 2011!
