A matching grant was provided for the Community Communications Project. The goals of the project are to provide leaders of low-income grassroots organizations with reporting and radio broadcasting skills and put their news on the airwaves of Arkansas.

Calumet Project $10,000

The Calumet Project is a 12 year old coalition of community, religious and labor groups which organizes for economic, environmental and social justice. Funds were provided in support of the Brownfield Community Organizing Project to insure a high level of community involvement in the efforts to clean up and attract businesses to abandoned, environmentally contaminated factories (brownfields) in northwest Indiana.

Center for Young Women's Development $10,000

CYWD is a youth-organized, run, and directed organization working to address the lack of youth sensitive services, leadership opportunities and self-advocacy for young women who are living on their own. Funds were provided in support of the Girls in Charge project which trains young women to be advocates, comissioners, board members and organizers.

IRC is a grassroots organizing group committed to preserving the well being of Idaho family farms and rural communities. Funds were provided to help organize a chapter in Lemhi County, in opposition to a cyanide heap leach mine.

Rogue Institute for Ecology and Economy $4,000

The Rogue Institute is an organization of millworkers and environmentalists which formed in response to the polarization between those two communities in southwest Oregon. Funds were provided in support of the Forest Ecosystem Management project, which will bring together 30 landowners to collaboratively protect and manage their forest lands in an environmentally and economically sustainable way.

Safer Pest Control Project $5,000

SPCP is dedicated to the reduction of pesticide use in Illinois. Funds were provided for the the Urban Schools Project to establish Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as the standard practice in public schools throughout Chicago and in public housing projects.

Strategic Actions for a Just Economy $5,000

SAJE is a popular education center organized by a diverse group of labor and community organizers in order to address the need for increased collaboration, sharing and learning among grassroots groups. Funds were provided for the Worker Ownership Education Project, which promotes ways in which low-income people can leverage business skills, capital and knowledge through collective ventures such as worker owned businesses, marketing cooperatives and consumer cooperatives.

United Indian Nations, Inc. Community Development Corp. $9,500

UINCDC undertakes housing and economic development projects to improve life for American Indians in the Bay Area. Funds were provided to support an innovative community organizing process geared specifically for the Native community centered around traditional Indian rituals that will be closely tied to development initiatives in issues such as access to health care, education, housing and employment opportunities, among others.

The VAC advocates on behalf of individuals living with AIDS and HIV through coalitions, and serves as a statewide forum for AIDS organizations. Funds were provided for general operating support.

Welfare Rights Organizing Coalition $4,000

WROC's mission is to educate and empower low-income parents who receive public assistance so that they can effect welfare policy reform at the welfare office and on the state level. Funds were provided for their community organizing initiatives.

Using the services of counselors, clergy, educators, business people, etc, CCWM will offer workshops, group discussions, and retreats for adolescent girls and young women, the goal of which is to teach tolerance and respect for ethnic differences, conflict resolution and responsible decision-making skills.

In the Community Problem Solving Program, students apply creative problem solving skills to a significant problem in their community. Working toward solutions to the problem, students develop skills in organization, communication and cooperation. Funds were provided for transportation costs to allow students to investigate problems of the community.

Project EARTH is an environmental awareness program for seventh graders. Students become actively involved in solving environmental concerns through 3 componants of the project, a science magazine written by and for students, a symposium which connects students with the community to explore solutions, and an field study trip. Each student designs an action project, provides solutions and commits to 30 hours of work and environmental study.

Funds were provided to transform the school courtyard into an outdoor garden/learning laboratory in order to establish a program that integrates gardening with language arts, math, and other science related fields.

This mental health care system consumer rights group, run by and for people with mental illness works to help influence who gets hired to work with them at the mental health center, testify at public hearings to prevent defunding of emergency services, and create a video entitled "With Our Own Voices".
