Pregnant women craving ice cream can still have their Ben & Jerry's! All of the milk, cream, as well as the eggs used in our products are pasteurized during the production process. Also, add-ins such as raw cookie dough or brownie batter found in our product are made with pasteurized eggs.

Expecting mothers are also often concerned with alcohol or caffeine content of some of our flavors. Rest assured the trace amount of liqueur or caffeine used in our flavorings is perfectly safe for you to consume.

We do not have a list of gluten-free flavors. Sorry! The ingredients that we use change quite often. We do not want to claim a flavor is gluten-free, then have that list become outdated and the recipients not aware of the latest changes.

Ben and Jerry’s has a very proactive approach to addressing the concerns of gluten-restricted and other food allergic individuals. We work closely with all of our ingredient suppliers, including packaging, to verify all ingredient components. This includes those ingredients in natural flavors, colors and spices that would be a concern to persons with sensitivity to gluten. We ensure that this information is then included on our product’s ingredient label.

If our product contains gluten, its presence would be indicated on the label by the words “wheat flour”, "flour", or other sources of gluten such as but not limited to malt and oats. Should any of our products contain those grains (wheat, flour, barley, oats, rye, malt, etc.) the label would reference them. We understand that there are tricky ways that gluten can be missed. We assure you that we have researched our ingredients carefully, and we know exactly what is going into our ice cream.

Ben and Jerry’s is a member of the Food Allergy Network and the Food Allergy Resource and Research Program. Upon the advice of these consumer and industry groups we do not provide a list of flavors that do not contain gluten. There is always a concern with any list that the list would be replicated and the end recipients would not receive updates that would be required with a formulation change. The safe approach recommended by these organizations is to read the label each time a purchase is made. We are very sorry that we can not provide you with a list. Recognizing that reading food labels can be time-consuming and tedious, we wish to encourage you in your daily effort to read all food labels, as it is the best way for us to insure that you receive the information you need to make an informed and confident choice.

Ben & Jerry's has a very proactive approach to addressing the concerns of persons with food sensitivities. Our policies and procedures are such that if peanuts or tree nuts (almonds, cashews, chestnuts, walnuts, pistachios, pecans, hazelnuts/filberts, macadamias, Brazil nuts, pine nuts) as well as eggs, milk, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, seeds, and lupin are not listed in the ingredient declaration or in an Allergy Information statement in boldface on the package, then the product is safe to consume for persons with allergies to those ingredients.

We have systems and policies in place to help protect our consumers from cross-contamination. While we process nut flavors on shared equipment that also processes non-nut flavors, Ben & Jerry's employs strict sanitation procedures and processes that ensure complete cleaning of all equipment. Also, while it is virtually impossible to make absolute guarantees, Ben & Jerry's is confident that not only are our products good to eat, they are also safe to eat. For specific information about our products, we ask that you continuously refer to the labels on our products as they are the most complete and most up-to-date source for specific food allergen information.

We work closely with our distributors and retailers to ensure that our most popular flavors are widely available. It can be a difficult process to get other flavors authorized for sale at those stores, but you can help us out by letting the frozen foods manager know you'd like her/him to carry your favorite flavor of Ben & Jerry's.

Here are a few other options:

1. Check out our Flavor Locator. You select your favorite flavor, input your zip code and how many miles you're willing to travel. The locator gives you a list of stores where your flavor recently sold. If the flavor isn't listed, it may have been discontinued.

2. Ben & Jerry's scoop shops also carry a good selection of flavors in pints and can handpack a pint for you if they have the flavor in bulk. If there is a shop in your area, check it out.

3. Independent and convenience-type stores, vs. major grocery chains, tend to authorize more flavor choices. Some stores are willing to place special flavor orders for individual consumers. Speak with someone at the store to see what they can do for you.

Almost all of our products are certified kosher. Occasionally there are exceptions. Please be certain to check all packaging for the Kof-K symbol to assure the kosher status of the Ben & Jerry's product you are purchasing.

Just a side note that our Scoop Shops are not certified Kosher because non-Kosher items are served within the same area.

Ben & Jerry's ice cream base mixes are made with ingredients that are not genetically modified. Some of our suppliers of the chunks and swirls that go into our U.S. ice cream provide us with assurance that their ingredients are also from non-genetically modified origins. At this time, all of the ingredients in the following U.S. flavors are sourced with supplier non-GMO assurance: Vanilla, Chocolate, Cherry Garcia, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Chunky Monkey, Pistachio Pistachio, Coffee, Mint Chocolate Chunk, Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz, Strawberry, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Milk and Cookies. Some of the chunks and swirls used in our other U.S. ice cream flavors, and the base mix of our sorbet and frozen yogurts, may include genetically modified ingredients, but in most cases, it doesn't amount to much. We intend to transition to non-GMO formulations for all of our products in the U.S. We have reformulated the products that we export to meet the non-GMO requirements of the international markets where they are sold.

Well-cared-for dairy cows are a key ingredient to good ice-cream and sustainable dairy farms, a point well appreciated by dairy producers. High quality animal welfare continually takes place from birth to milking and finally until the time a cow leaves the farm. This includes rising calves and heifers in a good environment, providing calm interactions between cows and employees and caring for animals so they can enjoy basic freedoms. Cows must have nutritious quality feed, clean abundant water, comfortable areas to rest, and appropriate health management. The dairy farmers in the St. Albans Cooperative work hard to ensure the comfort and health of their cows because they care about their animals, want to ensure milk quality and sustainable production.

In 2011 Ben & Jerry’s initiated the Caring Dairy program with the St. Albans Cooperative. This innovative program provides farmers the opportunity to assess the “sustainability” of their farm operation, including animal husbandry. The Caring Dairy program allows farmers to assess their farm in terms of economic, social and environmental attributes, provides a score for the farm and then requires written improvement plans and participation in educational workshops. Animal Husbandry has consistently been a high scoring area as farmers care deeply about their animals and want to ensure milk quality and healthy animals.

We also continue our opposition to the artificial growth hormone rBGH to boost milk production.

We are proud to source our dairy from the St. Albans Coop, a farmer-owned cooperative located in Franklin County, Vermont. The Coop has been a long-term partner with Ben & Jerry’s, providing us the dairy we use to make our delicious product and whose farmers are dedicated to keeping Vermont part of the valuable working landscape. A group of these farmers voluntarily choose to participate in Ben & Jerry’s Sustainable Dairy program known as “Caring Dairy.” Caring Dairy identifies 11 indicators of sustainable dairy farming that include: Animal Husbandry, Soil Fertility and Health, Soil loss, Nutrients, Pest Management, Biodiversity, Farm Economics, Energy, Water, Social Human Capital and Impact on Local Economy. The program offers farmers a practical framework for understanding, evaluating, and continuously improving the sustainability of their dairy operations based on economic, social and environmental criteria. We believe that a farm that operates in a balance of “Happy Planet, Happy Farmer, Happy Cow” provides a scenario that benefits all aspects of dairy farming.

All of us here at Ben & Jerry’s are happy to tell you that the company is nearing the completion of a transition to egg suppliers who use “Certified-Humane,” cage-free methods to raise their egg-laying hens. That makes us the first national food manufacturer to make this transition. We were convinced by the research that shows cage-free egg systems, combined with rigorous third-party certification, allow hens more opportunity to engage in normal behaviors such as roosting, scratching, and stretching their wings. We believe the Certified Humane standard we use is the Gold Standard for egg production, administered by the nonprofit group, Humane Farm Animal Care. As of 2011, 99% of the eggs Ben & Jerry’s uses in our ice cream base mix are Certified Humane cage-free.

The Fairtrade Mark label guarantees consumers that the farmers who grew the ingredients in a product are paid a fair price for their harvest, are following good agricultural practices, and investing in their farms and their communities. Under Fairtrade, farmers can increase their incomes, allowing them to earn a decent living and in many cases, gain access to better education and healthcare for their families.

The presence of the Fairtrade certification label means that every step involved in sourcing that ingredient was monitored and mark by an independent, third party mark agency to ensure the farmers really received a fair price.

Statement in Support of Occupy Wall Street
October 6, 2011

We, the Ben & Jerry's Board of Directors, compelled by our personal convictions and our Company’s mission and values, wish to express our deepest admiration to all of you who have initiated the non-violent Occupy Wall Street Movement and to those around the country who have joined in solidarity. The issues raised are of fundamental importance to all of us. These include:

• The inequity that exists between classes in our country is simply immoral.

• We are in an unemployment crisis. Almost 14 million people are unemployed. Nearly 20% of African American men are unemployed. Over 25% of our nation’s youth are unemployed.

• Many workers who have jobs have to work 2 or 3 of them just to scrape by.

• Higher education is almost impossible to obtain without going deeply in debt.

• Corporations are permitted to spend unlimited resources to influence elections while stockpiling a trillion dollars rather than hiring people.

We know the media will either ignore you or frame the issue as to who may be getting pepper sprayed rather than addressing the despair and hardships borne by so many, or accurately conveying what this movement is about. All this goes on while corporate profits continue to soar and millionaires whine about paying a bit more in taxes. And we have not even mentioned the environment.

We know that words are relatively easy but we wanted to act quickly to demonstrate our support. As a board and as a company we have actively been involved with these issues for years but your efforts have put them out front in a way we have not been able to do. We have provided support to citizens' efforts to rein in corporate money in politics, we pay a livable wage to our employees, we directly support family farms and we are working to source fairly traded ingredients for all our products. But we realize that Occupy Wall Street is calling for systemic change. We support this call to action and are honored to join you in this call to take back our nation and democracy.
