Coalition on Homelessness, San Fransisco $7,500 126 Hyde Street, #102 San Fransisco, CA 94102 A union of impoverished and homeless people who collectively work to find and implement solutions to poverty and homelessness, by ensuring the active participation of poor people on both the design and critique of public policy and non-profit services that address the root causes of poverty. Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition $9,500 P.O. Box 18874 Denver, CO 80218 A statewide organization of people with all types of disabilities and their allies working to abolish inaccessibilty and discrimination against people with disabilities. Funds were provided for leadership training and developing of community organizing skills for 10 people with disabilities. Dakota Rural Action $5,000 Box 549 Brookings, SD 57006 A grassroots, membership organization of low and moderate income people dedicated to social and economic justice for rural people.The Factory Farm/Family Farm Project developed in response to a huge beef feedlot sited over the Big Sioux aquifer, which supplies water to South Dakota's largest city. They are working to ensure strong environmental protections and address local and state permitting procedures for factory farm hog confinement facilitites. Equality Colorado $5,000 1245 E. Colfax #312 Denver, CO 80203 A statewide grassroots organization working to combat homophobia and work for equality by building a stronger movement of activists working on gay, lesbian and bisexual equality throughout the state of Colorado and organizing for full inclusion in all communities. Northern Appalachian Restoration Project $13,000 PO Box 6 Lancaster, NH 03584 A network of forest reform activists in New England. Funding was provided for the Forestry Reform Project which promotes low impact forestry as an economically and ecologically-sound alternative to destructive timber industry practices, and the Herbicide Project which seeks to reestablish community control of the use of toxics in communities affected by the arial spraying of chemical defoliants by the timber industry. Range Watch $7,000 Rural Route 1 Box 450 Posey, CA 93260 This rural, direct-action, citizen watchdog group works to reduce the damage on public lands from private, commercial livestock grazing by visually documenting conditions and building constituencies to seek proper range management and greater industry accountability on public lands. Rocky Mountain Peace Center $5,000 1520 Euclid Boulder, CO 80302 A community research, education and action group working to ensure credible environmental cleanup of radioactive and toxic materials at Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant by focusing on non-proliferation of plutonium, safe storage of radioactive wastes, and responsible cleanup that ensures long term environmental integrity. Sakhi for South Asian Women $7,500 PO Box 20208 Greeley Square Station New York, NY 10001 A resource, support and organizing center for South Asian women who are survivors of all forms of violence. Funds were provided for the Domestic Worker's Project which addresses the needs of exploited domestic workers who are economically, verbally and often physically abused by their employers. They work to outreach, to empower and organize these often isolated workers and enforce their civil rights for socially-just working conditions. Seniors with Power United for Rights $7,500 7100 St Charles Avenue New Orleans, LA 70118 This membership organization of largely disenfranchised seniors is working to empower themselves and organize around issues that effect them like transportation, utility rates and health care. Funds were provided for efforts at broadening and diversifying their membership base and training new senior leaders. Community Ecomomics Foundation $500 P.O. Box 135 Lancaster PA 17608 CEF is dedicated to creating economic development opportunities for battered & formerly battered women. Funds were provided for community outreach efforts to market the CEF and a thrift shop that they run. David Jon Louison Child Center $250 137 Newbury Street Brockton MA 02401 This shelter for homeless women & children is testing a pilot project whereby women who have successfully completed the program return to share with residents their experiences in their transition to independence and facilitate peer groups. Food & Hunger Hotline/One City Cafe $500 115 East 23rd Street New York NY 10010 One City Cafe is a restaurant and model job training program that provides food service, management and culinary skills training to people in transition from homelessness to self-reliance. Funds were provided to add a computer literacy component to the program. Piedmont Middle School $700 701 E. Second St. Charlotte, NC 28022 A 20 year old school known and respected for it's innovative approach to learning with a culturally and racially diverse student body. The Piedmont Peace Plays are open-ended vignettes that actively engage the audience, designed by the students. They help other students explore issues that are relevent to their lives. Funds to bring the plays to other middle schools that have expressed interest. Seattle Youth Involvement Network $1,000 172 -20th Ave. Seattle WA 98122 Youth from throughout the city make alliances with public officials and civic groups in a campaign against youth violence. They develop projects that are youth initiated and youth driven and that will unite young people around the city to influence public policy and prepare people to make positive change. Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault $1,000 PO Box 405 Montpelier, VT 05601 Working with young children of battered women and young community children, ages 3-6, Nobody Like Me! is an arts-based, hands-on learning experience designed to enhance self-esteem and teach non-violent conflict resolution skills. Women's & Children's Crisis Center $975 720 W. Washington Boise, ID 83702 To reach the teenage population in the area, WCCC will employ already existing"natural helpers"--peer counselors within school settings who provide emotional support to fellow students. These peer counselors will be further trained by WCCC to deal with students who have been victimized by family violence. |
