BEN & JERRYS AND DISCOVERY CHANNEL MULTIMEDIA
TEAM UP FOR ANIMAL PLANET CD-ROM CROSS PROMOTION

Discovery Multimedia Ben & Jerry's

Producer of interactive experiences of discovery that entertain, inform and inspire, Discovery Channel Multimedia and the makers of world famous ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbet, Ben & Jerry’s, today announced a national joint promotion tied in with the launch of Discovery’s Animal Planet CD-ROM. Including free pints of ice cream, a $10 rebate coupon offer on the CD-ROM, and a donation to the Humane Society of the United States, this campaign will be the first time Ben & Jerry’s has partnered in a national

a butterfly cross-promotion. The announcement was made by Tom Burke, vice president, sales & marketing, Discovery Enterprises Worldwide, and Mary Lou Kelley, director, marketing strategy, Ben & Jerry’s.

“Ben & Jerry’s mission to produce high quality ice cream and recognize the role business can play in improving the high quality of life of a broad community complements Discovery’s mission of helping people explore their worlds and satisfy their natural curiosity. We are flattered that Ben & Jerry’s has chosen Discovery as their first national partner to develop a cross-promotion,” said Burke. “We want to continue to reach a new level of consumers outside the typical computer channels. The Discovery Brand is our precious commodity and we are careful to preserve and protect it -- while promoting it. While investigating Ben & Jerry’s, we learned that our company missions are very similar and believed this was a perfect opportunity for both parties.” “We felt this promotion with Discovery, a top media brand and producer of high quality educational and informative content for kids and their families, would further our mission to highlight innovative ways people can work together to improve the quality of life,” said Kelley. “In addition, this promotion offers both Ben & Jerry’s and Discovery a way to give their consumers an added value.”

Beginning March 1997, the first 25,000 purchasers of the Animal Planet CD-ROM will receive coupons for a free pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. In addition, a $10 rebate offer on the Animal Planet CD-ROM will be printed on the side panel packaging of at least four million pints of Ben & Jerry’s World’s Best Vanilla, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chunky Monkey ice cream. Consumer awareness of this campaign will involve print advertisements, drive to retail spots on Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel and Animal Planet as well as point-of-purchase displays in national grocery stores, computer outlets, and Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops. At the end of the campaign, Discovery Channel Multimedia will make a charitable donation the Humane Society of the United States.
