BEN & JERRY’S MASTERS MARSHMALLOW TO CREATE “PHISH FOOD TM” Royalties From New Flavor to Benefit Lake Champlain Restoration Efforts

Ben & Jerry's Phish Food TM Ice Cream Pint Lid SOUTH BURLINGTON,VT: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have been neighbors with the members of Phish since the band’s early years as favorites of the local music scene. When Ben & Jerry’s suggested mixing up a Phish ice cream to celebrate their shared Vermont roots, the band agreed. So Ben & Jerry’s concocted a chocolate ice cream with chewy marshmallow nougat, a thick caramel swirl and a school of fudge fish in every pint. The name: Phish Food TM ice cream.

“This is chocolate and marshmallow the way it was meant to be. Most marshmallow variegates disappear into nothingness. You can see the white streaks but you can’t taste them, you can’t feel them, you can’t experience the true glorious marshmallowness of it all. Not so with Phish Food TM. If anyone doesn’t think this flavor is marshmallowy enough, I’ll start ’bouncing Ben & Jerry's Phish Food TM Ice Cream around the room!’ (to quote a Phish lyric) ” , said Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen.

The Phish Food TM package is a departure from Ben & Jerry’s traditional graphics. The pint container is designed with images from Phish’s concert light show, featuring Phish band members Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman and Page McConnell on the pint lid along with Ben and Jerry.

All of Phish’s share of the proceeds from the sale of Phish Food TM will go to environmental efforts on Lake Champlain. To kick off this effort, Phish will hold a benefit concert at Burlington, Vermont’s 1,400 seat Flynn Theater on March 18, 1997, with appearances by Ben and Jerry and free Phish Food TM all around. With only 1,400 tickets for one of the hottest touring bands in the country, they’re expected to sell out in minutes. More information on the benefit concert and Phish is available on the Phish Web site.
