With summer upon us, we’re gearing up for lots and lots of backyard grilling. But if you know Ben & Jerry’s, you know that it’s really all about dessert for us. Sure, dinner’s important (or so we’re told), but dessert is really where it’s at.
So we asked our Flavor Gurus for their absolute favorite dessert pairings for their summer cookouts. Thankfully, they all included ice cream. Whew.
The Classic Beef Burger
Pair With: Bourbon Fudge Brownie Sundae
It wouldn’t be summer without a few classic burger nights. To compliment this beefy standard, the Gurus recommend another classic: a brownie sundae. But not just any brownie sundae, one made with bourbon-ized fudge. Start by whisking a small amount of your favorite bourbon into warm chocolate fudge drizzle. Then heat your brownies on the grill, scoop some Vanilla or Chocolate Fudge Brownie on top, drizzle with the fudge sauce, and finish with whipped cream.
Pair With: Grilled Pineapple Upside Down Cake Sundae
Chicken’s light, juicy flavor will pair wonderfully with this fruity, hearty concoction. Grill the pineapple slices and pound cake until warm and slightly browned, then top them with Ben & Jerry’s Vanilla and a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Pair With: Lemon Strawberry Shortbread Sundae
When seafood is on the menu, our Gurus suggest this unique dessert gem. Start by serving iced tea with dinner, ideally in a pitcher with a dozen or so slices of lemon. After dinner, pull 8 of the lemon slices marinated in tea out of the pitcher, coat both sides with sugar and char them on the grill. Wait until they have some nice grill marks but aren’t dried out. Then chop them up and add a tablespoon or so of sugar. Make each sundae with vanilla ice cream, shortbread cookies, tea-infused charred lemon, strawberries, and whipped cream.
Grilled Portobello Mushrooms
Pair With: Vegan Brownie Sundae
Bring your vegan friends to dessert heaven by serving the vegan brownie sundae after they’ve enjoyed your sensational grilled Portobello mushrooms. The recipe is easy: one vegan brownie, a scoop or two (or three!) of your favorite Ben & Jerry’s Non-Dairy flavor, non-dairy whipped topping, and a drizzle of vegan hot fudge.
Pair With: Toasted Donut Cinnamon Streusel Sundae
This dessert is especially perfect if your rib recipe includes a slight cinnamon flavor. But even if it doesn’t, the toasted donut cinnamon streusel sundae will be a perfect finish to this messy meal. Cut your donuts in half and grill briefly on the barbecue. Then top them with Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns ice cream, caramel sauce, and whipped cream. We also added crushed up Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal for even more cinnamon deliciousness!
Pair With: Monkey’s On The Rum Shake*
You might not necessarily think of grilling when you opt to have a pizza night, but trust us, grilled pizza is a trend worth checking out. And it’s perfect for a crowd, because everyone can build their own pie with their chosen toppings. After dinner, we recommend the Monkey’s On The Rum Shake, a fruity, boozy tropical adventure that will compliment any pizza – whether it’s smothered in kale and artichokes or sausage and bacon. Make it with our Non-Dairy Chunky Monkey or the original – something for your dairy-free and dairy-loving guests alike.
Are your barbecue guests staying the night? You’ll be the host of the season if you make this totally insane breakfast sandwich for them the next morning. Pairs well with morning chit-chat, big mugs of coffee, and bedhead. Pants optional.
