Congressman John Lewis: A Lifetime of Good Trouble
Today, we join the nation in mourning the loss of a national treasure. Congressman John Lewis was more than just a civil rights leader and statesman, he was an American hero who worked to improve the plight of all people regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation or other differences.
As we respond to the challenges of a global pandemic and racial divide due to the murder of George Floyd by police, we would all do better to follow Congressman Lewis’s example of leadership. He never shied away from getting into what he described as “good trouble” for the purpose of advancing justice, but he did so while treating everyone, including his opponents, with dignity and respect.
The Ben & Jerry’s family was fortunate to have been joined by Congressman Lewis during his trip to Vermont in October. We will forever cherish the brief time that he spent with our people. Although our hearts are heavy, we are thankful for the inspiring legacy left by Congressman Lewis. May we all aspire to do as he did and get into good trouble.
