This Could be the Most Important Week For GMO Labeling
Food is a personal choice. That’s why we’re all for knowing what's in the food we’re eating. In the case of GMOs— Genetically Modified Organisms that have been created using gene-splicing techniques, which allow DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory— mandatory labeling ensures the public's right to freedom of choice. This is not a radical concept; more than 60 countries around the world requiring companies to disclose GMO ingredients in food. But it’s taken until very recently for individual states like Vermont to pass their own labeling bills (many more are being proposed around the country), and there still is no federal standard.
This is a critical time for GMO labeling legislation. Call 844-311-6262 TODAY and tell your representative to VOTE NO on H.R. 1599!
Now, we’re at a critical moment for GMO labeling. An industry-backed bill being voted on this week in the U.S. House of Representatives is aiming to strip states of any power to regulate GMOs. Critics have named this legislation the Deny Americans the Right-to-Know or DARK Act. Here’s how the DARK Act will make it nearly impossible for consumers to know what’s in their food:
- Prevents individual states, including Vermont, from instituting GMO labeling laws
- Prevents the FDA from affecting federal labeling
- It will instead update a voluntary labeling standard that been around since 2001 and never been used by the food industry
- Allows companies that use GMOs in their products to claim that they are “natural”
- Prohibits states and local governments from regulating GMO plants
The DARK Act will erase years of work around the country to squelch the money and power of big agribusiness, and make sure food labeling isn’t for sale. Like a majority of Americans, we’re pretty sure you want the right to know what’s in the food you eat.
If you’ve never called your congressperson, make this the first time you do.
