Time at Greyston:
When I came here, they opened their arms and showed me that there are other things to do in life.
I was unemployed, just staying at home wasting my time doing nothing. I decided it was time to get a job, and earn my own money instead of asking family members. My life was heading down that road. I used to hang around the wrong crowd. That’s all they did was sell drugs. I would have ended up doing the same thing as them and ending up in jail. I chose to take a different path.
They offered me a job here, they offer me child care for my daughter here. They offer me tuition to go back to school to further my education. If there’s anything else you want to achieve in life, they’ll help you.
You’ve got to put your foot forward and make those steps yourself. They may open the door for you, but you got to make your way in there and do what you’ve got to do.
I probably would have ended up in the street doing things I have no business doing. And that’s not the life that I want to live, especially now that I have my daughter. How am I supposed to explain to my daughter that I’m incarcerated for doing something dumb? I don’t want to do that. I want my daughter to be proud of things that I did and things I’m doing for her.
I just want to do positive things in life, because I know I’m a positive person. If there’s something I can help someone with, that’s what I want to do. I like to be around people who are positive. People who are negative, I stay away from. I know it’s not in my best interest.
