This is it, guys. We’re in the Halloween stretch run and there are boatloads of reasons to be excited. We’ve got candy, scary movies and costumes. There’s also Phish in Las Vegas, which is always a good bet. Might as well go all in!
There’s a rumor, started by Phish themselves, that the band won’t be covering an album this year. Truth or subterfuge, we spoke with fans in our Ben & Jerry’s Vermont office to get their take on what the boys will bust out.
I’m just going to come right out and say it—Phish is going to play Gamehendge! It’s often considered the band’s first album even though it was never released, and if last year’s Wingsuit set taught us anything, it’s that Phish has no problem covering a Phish album that isn’t officially a Phish album. If they’re really serious about abandoning the musical costume tradition, this is the biggest way they can go out."
I don’t think they’ll wear a costume this year, but if you twisted my arm and made me guess, I’d go with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. Phish inducted the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Trey is on record saying this is one of his favorite albums. If they’re going to cover anyone, why not cover a hero?"
Call me a hippie all you want, but I’m saying it’s time Phish stopped messing around and cover the Grateful Dead’s American Beauty. Think about it. They’ve all played with various members of the Dead, the bands share the same musical DNA, and the crowd would go absolutely crazy. Bring it full circle, Phish!"
I know Phish covered Dark Side of the Moon in 1998, but it wasn’t technically a Halloween costume. The show was on November 2nd, and they didn’t dedicate a full set to the album. That’s why I think Pink Floyd’s Meddle is the perfect candidate. The album already has an eerie feel that screams of Halloween, and how awesome would it be to hear them jam out Echoes with Chris Kuroda’s lights setting the scene?"
It’s onwards and upwards after last year’s Wingsuit/Fuego drop. They may play a cover song or two, but they won’t be doing an entire album. That doesn’t mean they won’t do something awesome and spooky. It’s Vegas! What happens there stays there, right?"
Look. This is never going to happen. But how cool would it be if Phish played an entire set of Guns N’ Roses covers? Open with Welcome to the Jungle, close with Sweet Child O’ Mine, and blow our minds with every song in between. My real prediction is an entire set of random covers, with November Rain as the breakout that everyone talks about."
