When we heard there was a new craft brewery on the block, we couldn’t wait to check it out--even if it was in San Diego! Let’s just say, it was worth the drive.
Between the giant mural made from 11,000 sticky notes, the antique book-lined bar, and the refurbished church pews installed just the day before, the eclectic atmosphere at Modern Times Beer in Point Loma was the perfect setting for our West Coast Core Tour kickoff party.
Party guests indulged in our new Core flavors, which were paired with two Modern Times stouts for frothy beer floats. Flavors included our Salted Caramel Blondie Core ice cream paired with Modern Times Monster’s Park Imperial Stout, and Hazed & Confused Core ice cream paired with Modern Times Black House Stout.
San Diego food truck favorite Simply Fresh provided made-to-order, locally sourced grub, and there were plenty of old school games like corn hole, Jenga, and Connect Four to keep the party going into the night.
For as beloved as Modern Times is by the San Diego community, you’d never guess they brewed their very first batch less than a year ago. May 31, 2013 marked the first batch, and since then, Modern Times Beer has grown to offer a variety of core beers (Fortunate Islands is our fave), pilot batches, and even the occasional experimental brew to the hop and malt-loving masses. Their 2,000 sq. foot tasting room opened up last September in Point Loma, and tasting room number two is opening soon in North Park.
Modern Times founder, Jacob McKean, says the brewery is inspired by all things Utopian. He named the brewery after an old utopian society built in what is now Brentwood, New York, and in accordance with traditional utopian values, he strives to make Modern Times a pocket of complete happiness for those who stop by. The theme even plays out in his brews, most of which are named after real or mythological utopias.
To thank Modern Times for their hospitality, Ben & Jerry’s donated $2 for every pint of Modern Times beer sold to Bike San Diego—a nonprofit organization that promotes everyday riding in the city of San Diego, and partners regularly with Modern Times Beer.
We had a blast hanging with the San Diego beer and bike community, and can’t wait to be back again soon!
