It’s a Brand New Day
New Year’s Eve is so close we can almost taste the champagne, which means only one thing: it’s time to make our resolutions!
We love making resolutions.
We all get a fresh start on January 1. A clean slate. It’s a brand-new day, people. A fresh opportunity to make things right.
Let’s Make This Happen
The most fun part about resolutions is making them. Science tells us why the hardest part is actually keeping them. Now, normally, we’re big fans of science. But in this case, no way. We’re know we’re going to make it happen this year. And we know that you will too.
So, how are you going to change your life in 2017? Are you the type of person who likes taking baby steps toward achievable goals, or do you dream huge and lay it all on the line?
Every change, no matter its size, can make a difference. The important thing is to start. So let’s get going. Today.
Item number 1
Fossil fuels are a societal and economic addiction, and it’s time to quit. We can’t keep burning coal and pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and think that everything’s somehow going to work out just fine. So let’s reduce our carbon footprint and keep those fossil fuels in the ground!
Item number 2
Be More Active
Sure, you could do a few more hikes and bike rides, but just as important is to be more of an activist for the causes you care about. Think about what issues you’re really passionate about, and make a game plan for how to get involved. Go to a Black Lives Matter rally. Volunteer at your favorite local non-profit. Get tuned into the activism network in your area, and make a difference.
Item number 3
Every once in a while, or perhaps a bit more often than that, we all slip up and utter an impolite word or two. It happens. But we’ve been hearing a LOT of hateful and violent language recently, especially during and after the presidential election, and that needs to stop. Divisive language tears us apart.
Item number 4
Spend Less, Save More
The latest figures show that we spent around $6.9 billion on our elections in 2016, including about $2.65 billion on the presidential race. That’s a ridiculous amount of money. There are so many better ways to spend and invest that kind of cash.
Item number 5
Nothing awakens our sense of wonder or expands our notion of the possible more than traveling. As we experience other cultures, we learn the true value of our shared experience on this planet. Let’s get out more this year! And then bring a renewed appreciation of our common humanity back home.
Item number 6
Reading is another great way to experience new ideas and visit unfamiliar places, except you don’t even need to budge from your chair. We want to spend this year gaining much-needed perspective, learning about communities that have a completely different lived experience than us, about racial and social justice. Because we’re all in this together. And the world needs all the understanding and empathy it can get.
Item number 7
Learn a New Hobby
Bored? Feeling sluggish? Maybe you need a new hobby! Just take a look at all these amazingly cool ideas and projects at the forefront of the new clean-energy economy. Inspired? Of course you are! Fill up your weekends by planning some renewable energy projects of your own.
Item number 8
Focus on Relationships
It all comes down to relationships. The people we love, the people we trust, the people we share our lives with. This year, let’s not be afraid to engage on tough subjects like racial justice, climate change, and LGBTQ equality. And most importantly, listen. Listen to others’ lived experiences and learn from them. Spread love and understanding as far as the eye can see.
Happy New Year! Here’s to making this beautiful, complicated world a kinder, fairer, and more welcoming place for everyone.
