With the transition to our new Fairtrade Certified, non-GMO sourced toffee piece, we seem to have hit a bump in the road. Lengthy taste-testing, paired with some timely fan feedback, has shown us that the new toffee chunk in our Toffee Bar Crunch flavors isn’t quite right. Our Flavor Gurus have been hard at work getting to the bottom of things and rest assured, we’re working on getting back that great toffee taste our fans have come to know and love.
Why did we change the toffee in the first place? Let us explain. Years ago, Ben & Jerry’s made a promise to lead with our values and source ingredients ethically. This is why we work hard to source quality ingredients while paying fair wages to the folks who produce them. As a result, we’ve decided to look to new suppliers to make sure we honor our commitment to transition ALL of our ingredients to Fairtrade certified and non-GMO sourced.
Determined to deliver on our word, we chose to find a new toffee supplier that could meet our specifications. This partner uses a traditional, “old fashioned,” handmade process to make the toffee, which gives the toffee chunks that great crunch and rich almond flavor. Because this process requires making the toffee in small batches, it can be difficult to maintain the cooking temperature across the entire process. As a result, some of the pieces get a little more love from the kettle than we’d like.
We have worked directly with the supplier to improve the cooking process for the new toffee chunk, so rest assured that we are committed to making our toffee flavors work for all Ben & Jerry’s fans as quickly as possible! Thanks for your patience and stay tuned for more updates on our progress
