We believe that great ice cream comes from happy cows. That’s why our Caring Dairy program works hand in hand with the dairy farms that provide our milk to do what’s best for their cows and the land that they live on.
Ending Tail Docking
This year, we’ve decided that there’s one more way we can ensure the happiness of our cows: doing away with tail docking. After talking with industry experts, researchers and veterinarians to fully understand the practice, we’ve decided that we would all be better off without it. In fact, much of the dairy industry is moving away from tail docking, and we’re happy to be part of the change.
In place since 2011, our Caring Dairy program invests in and supports sustainability and viability at over 300 dairy farms that participate in the voluntary program. By promoting practices that ensure cows are well cared for and that farming practices are sustainable, we can be sure that the milk that makes up your pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is full of nothing but MOO-phoria.
And now that includes happily undocked tails. Farmers in the Caring Dairy program will end tail docking by the end of 2016 to remain eligible for the program.
